Cultural Arts

From visual arts to piano recitals our cultural programs give ways for youth to show expression that help capture their passions and emotions. The arts allow Newaygo County youth to see every aspect of how music and art affect lives.

Since 1950, beginning with Family Concerts and music scholarships, TrueNorth Community Services has provided affordable, accessible arts experiences for youth. Participation in the arts is especially important for children and youth, improving performance in school and promoting creative problem solving, self-discipline and responsibility. TrueNorth Cultural Arts programs enhance area schools’ arts programs and provide area families with affordable, accessible arts opportunities they would not otherwise experience.

Music Enhancement

Local area piano teachers have the opportunity to see their students perform on TrueNorths’ Steinway piano. Recitals are typically held at the TrueNorth Service Center and allow family and friends to attend the concert setting. These additional performance experiences help build confidence in these young musicians. All participating students receive a certificate of achievement. See your piano teacher for details; or contact Riley Knight at (231) 924-0641, ext. 178.

A.R.T.S. (Artists Reaching & Teaching Students)

The A.R.T.S. (Artists Reaching & Teaching Students) committee, consisting of high school and middle school art educators in Newaygo County, develop programs designed to enhance visual arts education. We accomplish this through two main programs.

Art-In provides a guest artist who leads area students and their teachers in a concentrated, hands-on, creative art experience/clinic.

The TrueNorth Art Contest & Exhibit allows students to enter their artwork in a Newaygo County countywide art exhibit. The students’ pieces are on public display for a week after being judged by a guest adjudicator. Individuals receive merit ribbons and portfolio winners receive a monetary scholarship to use toward art camps, classes and/or supplies. Each year one of the Director’s Award art pieces is chosen and purchased and then displayed at TrueNorth in the art gallery. See photos below of winners throughout the years.
