More than 200 Newaygo County elementary school students participated in TrueNorth Community Services’ September 11th Day of Service & Remembrance on Wednesday, September 11.
The students, third-graders from Grant Elementary School and fourth-graders from White Cloud Elementary School, engaged in two hours of ceremonies, activities and community service projects at the TrueNorth Service Center in Fremont.
They listened to four local military veterans. They learned with demonstrations by the Newaygo Fire Department and the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office. They worked on volunteer projects for Spectrum Health Hospice and TrueNorth. They did some team-building exercises.
As Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Deputy Director Robert Near, a U.S. Army veteran from Montague who formerly worked with the Center for Nonprofit Housing, told them: "Today is really about remembrance."
The event was funded by a grant from the Fremont Area Community Foundation.
