This year was the 47th time that seventh- through 12th graders from Newaygo County showcased their artwork in TrueNorth’s countywide adjudicated scholarship contest.

There were 415 students from 10 Newaygo County middle, junior, and senior high schools entered in the 2019 TrueNorth Art Scholarship Contest/Exhibit, with honors recognition handed out in the Awards Presentation on April 22. About 300 people saw the exhibit, on display from April 22 to 25 at the TrueNorth Service Center in Fremont.

The top 15 student artists with portfolios received a $100 Scholarship Award, which can be used to purchase art supplies, attend art classes, or for tuition for a fine arts camp or class experience. In addition, ribbons were awarded for five Director’s Choice honorees, 21 Senior Honors, 30 Outstanding Recognition for High School, and 20 Outstanding Recognition for Middle School. The top Director’s Choice honoree has the option to sell their piece to TrueNorth for permanent display in the agency’s art collection.

The guest adjudicator was Timothy Norris, an artist and a member of the Muskegon Community College Art Department faculty. He and his wife, Pattie Opel, also an artist, own Kook’s Eye Gallery in Pentwater.

“I chose artwork that revealed a bit more individuality of the artist above and beyond the basic requirements of the assignment,” Norris said.
“I focused on three important traits in each artwork: 1, Development of technique; 2, development of interesting and effective composition; and 3, development of more personable and interesting concept and content and then veering away from more cliché or stereotypical subjects,” he said.
